Do I Look Like I Own An Ark?

    The Flood

    September 27th 2006

Today our apartment building flooded.  The roof was like a wading pool and the water rain down into the building, found its way between cracks and walls and made it’s way to the front of the building – to our roof.  The ceiling, light fittings and walls were running with water.

It started as a drip in our apartment and luckily I was home to notice it.  Suddenly the walls started weeping, like some Japanese horror movie.  From here the roof started to gush water and it was on for young and old.  I spent the day running about moving the bed, books, CDs, clothes and whatnot, grabbing anything I could to catch the water and then emptying buckets, bowls and vases as they became full.  The whole building was effected, but it was our apartment that was worse hit – joy!  The ceilings in both bedrooms and the kitchen were leaking, the walls were crumbling and the wallpaper peeling away.

The best part of all of this is although we couldn’t sleep in the bedroom for a few days the landlord (read: fucking moll who must die) refused to give us any support or rent reduction.  She then hired friends to fix the problems.  They slapped on some paint, covered the sagging roof with a new bit of wood (you’d think you’d remove wet saggy wood, not just shove a new bit over it) and left the tatami floors, crumbling walls and water stained woodwork untouched.  They also stole a watch valued at 3,000,000yen from our next-door neighbour and had to bring it back and apologise later that night.  Fucking landlord hasn’t dared show her face since the flood.  Clearly she’s trying to foster her tenants artistic flow in the hope that our soggy, abject distain for her laisser-faire handling of the situation will lead to the Japanese version of RENT bubbling up from her very own building.  She’s a piece of work and clearly needs to be run down.  I worry that if I ever do she her Benz in the building parking area again I will be forced to badge it!  Absolute slag!

Anyhoo, the roof is covered and the wet smell has abated so at least we can move furniture back around, put the bed back and sleep in the bedrooms again.  Thank god we were home and able to save most of our stuff.  The moll should be thanking us too, as we were the ones who realized the building was flooding, notified her staff and the real estate agent to get it fixed (the problem was some pipe/drain on the roof) before too much damage happened.  The clean-up has been a nightmare.

I do believe I am ready to move.

Madge... Esther... Dita... What do I call you?

    Confessions Tour 2006

    August 20th - Madonna’s Tokyo Dome performance.

We got our tickets early in the game through the pre-sale competition. Having the tickets so far in advance meant I was excited months ago and seemingly quite nonplussed by Madge’s pending performance… well, until the show started.  It was a great concert and I had a fun night.  Esther looked great, sang well, entertained and had the entire Dome up dancing.

This is my 4th Madonna concert and my second time to see her perform live this year.  Earlier this year I wrote one of those “Tell Us Why… In 25 words of less” things and won 2 tickets to her “secret live” at Ageha here in Tokyo.  I was within arms reach at that concert and so being so far away at the Tokyo Dome show couldn’t detract from my enjoyment.  I was on the main arena floor, so I shouldn’t be complaining… but you always want to be closer, don’t you?

    Walking In A Winter Wonderland

    The Trip

So, I am off to Europe for winter again.  The cheap tickets in winter win me over every time.  I will be jumping about quite a bit at first, but plan to slow down when I get to Portugal.

I finish work on the 11th of December and fly out to Copenhagen on the 12th.  I have a few days in Copenhagen, before jumping across to Prague.  I had originally planned to go: Copenhagen – Riga – Prague, but I thought I’d rather have a day extra in Copenhagen and Prague than rushing through all three cities.  After Prague I am off to Barcelona to meet Take.  Spain caused some planning headaches too – Take really just wants to see Portugal and isn’t interested in Paris.  I want to be in Paris for New Year, so we had to sacrifice seeing Spain.  Our original plan had been to see Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba and Madrid, but we realized we’d be rushing too much.  So, we have a few days in Barcelona to just hang and soak it all up, before jumping over to Portugal for Christmas.

There are so many places I want to see in Portugal too.  I have no idea how many places we’ll make it to (as we’re playing it by ear), but we will be in Lisbon before Christmas and will fly out of Porto on Dec 30th or 31st.  I just got a great book on Portuguese food from Mary-Liz, for my birthday!  So lucky… can’t wait to try all the food and wine Portugal has to offer.

The last stop on our whirlwind winter escape is Paris.  I have been wanting to get back to Paris for years.  I can’t wait to see it all… it’s been so long.  We leave Paris on January 4th, so we’ll have a few days to hang out, walk the streets, eat, drink and be merry!

    Drinks With Shagina

Sha-G (who will no longer tolerate me calling her “North American”… she is Canadian and won’t be bunched together geographically with you-know-who), take and I went out for a few drinks on September 8th.  If you’ve read any of my earlier blog entries you probably know how much I like the wine and atmosphere at Café Dance, so I was really keen to take Sha-G there.  We cooked pasta at my place first and then headed off to the bar.  We had a great bottle of Leeuwin Estate 2002 Art Series Chardonnay and then a bottle of Mount Ida Shiraz.  Yum!  Two fantastic bottles of wine and the lovely owner, Motoko, gave us a bottle of We’re Wines Cab Sav as a souvenir from her recent trip to Australia.  Cafe Dance is fantastic!  Motoko-san is a wonderful host.  If you're in Tokyo and you love wine - GO!!!

    First Day back

It’s true what they say, you know…. School Does Suck!!

    Buns In Ovens

    Babies

You know, it seems when you’re friends start having babies it just snowballs.  Allison, Bec, Sophie, Amber, Kehri, Nicola, Megumi (... I could go on) gave birth in recent years and then in the last couple of months Kasia and Tove both gave birth to baby girls.  Congratulations!

Also, congratulations to Amber (number 2), Peta and Ikemizu-san who are pregnant.

Next on the list... I'm guessing Shagina!!  It's infectious, I swear!

    Planning For Oz

    The Failed Australian Adventure

I had decided to head back to Oz this Christmas.  The plan was to go to WA and visit the Margaret River region, then fly to Adelaide for Christmas before hoping over to Tasmania to see Mary-Liz and family.  I was very excited about the plan and had invited my friend Eri (not the one that moved to LA, but Eri that I've know for about 7 years) to join us.  Eri came over and we started trying to plan dates and where we’d meet etc.  Plan in place we started pricing tickets… unfortunately the tickets were not cheap… and at some point in the ticket hunt I came across cheaper tickets to Europe.  Europe… cheaper… the seed was sowed.  We all decided Australia was too expensive in December, so have postponed the trip for a later date.  I really want to show Eri “my Australia”.  She’s been there before, and used to talk about moving there to study/work, but I really want to take her to some of the places she’s never seen.  It will happen… but this December I am off to Europe (see: The Trip).

    Bec & Co Arrive!!!

    My Summer Treat!

I was a very lucky boy this summer, a good friend of mine decided to bring her family to visit us in Japan.  Bec, Brett and Lila arrived on August 14th and I was ecstatic!  I love it when my friends come to stay and having Bec was especially special because they were coming with Lila (their daughter) and staying for a couple of weeks.  Bec and I have been friends for a long time and living out of Australia I haven’t been around to spend much time with her, or her family.  I can honestly say it was fantastic to have them here and I still miss them.  I think I talked Bec’s ear off and poor Brett had to endure me having a small (but controlled) hissy fit in a post-office – I hope they enjoyed their time here as much as I did.

On the 16th, Bec, Brett, Lila and I jumped on a shinkansen and headed down to Kyoto for the Daimonji Okuribi festival.  I have been to Kyoto 5 or 6 times, but I'd never seen the Daimonji festival, so it was a great opportunity for me too.  I only stayed for one night, but we had two days in Kyoto and I took them to a few of my favourite temples and shrines (and introduced them to Japanese CoCo’s curry).  They stayed on for two more nights and I think they had a great time seeing all Kyoto has to offer.

Midway through their time in Japan the O’Dummetons headed off to China.  Bec’s brother Matt lives in China, so it was a great opportunity for them to jump across to China and see him.  We’d found them cheap tickets on Iran Air… an airline I don’t believe they’ll be using again in a hurry.  They had a great time in China and spoilt me with a huge pile of DVDs (I need English language entertainment) that I am forever indebted to them for.

After China we had a couple of days together to shop, chat and eat… Brett was keen to have one last visit to the record shops in Tokyo and Bec and I charged around Ameyoko trying on shoes one day too.  It was so sad as their time here drew to an end.  I’m just hoping they come back real soon.

    O-bon: August 13th to 16th

    Aren't I Cultural?!

The O-bon (お盆) holiday is a Japanese Buddhist holiday to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors. Traditonally O-bon was held at different times in eastern and western Japan, but nowadays it’s held all over Japan in August to coincide with the summer holidays. The festival has evolved into something of a family reunion time and many people return to their home towns to not only visit graves, but also to catch-up with family and friends.  The whole of Japan is on holidays and although shops are generally open they can be hugely crowded or practically deserted.  The streets of Tokyo often take on an eerie feeling around this time.  So many people leave the city to return home or take a vacation, that normally busy areas can be oddly quiet.  I like being in Tokyo at O-bon time.  O-bon is also a great time to see some traditonal summer festivals that include Bon Odori (traditonal dances).  Or my favourite, the Toro Nagashi – the floating of paper lanterns to guide the spirits in their journey.

Asking for suggestions for Bec & co's visit

    Places recommended to me:

When I heard that Bec, Brett and Lila were coming to Japan to visit I started asking around about places we could take them.  I would have dearly loved to have had more time with them and to have been able to go to Okinawa, Hokkaido or Akita with them, but we didn’t have heaps of time and August is also THE most expensive time to travel in Japan.  Anyway, here is a list of some of the places I was told would be good to take people in Japan (I have excluded places I’ve already been, but if you want to see them, check out my VirtualTourist pages):

    l       Shima Onsen

    l       Misato-kan in Gunma

    l       Kusatsu

    l       Arima (near Kobe)

    l       Dougo Onsen (in Shikoku)

l       Kanuma (in Tochigi) for camping

    l       Karuizawa

    l       Ooarai beach

    l       Mt. Akagi (in Gunma)

Hopefully I can get to some of these places before I leave Japan.  For those of you interested in my Top 5 places in Japan (of the places I’ve been) then here they are:

                            Kyoto, Hokkaido, Takayama, Nagasaki, Hiroshima

    Thailand: July/August 2006

    Thailand

As I wrote in an earlier blog, I had been very undecided about where to go this past summer.  I ended up deciding on Tanzania, but it unfortunately fell through (I will get there though).  Anyway, soon after Tanzania fell through, Take suggested we go to Thailand together.  As much as I love traveling alone, having a travel buddy swayed me and so we booked tickets to Thailand.  We’d both been before (this was my third trip there), but we’d never been together and we both love Thai food, so we were both pretty fired up about the trip.

Whilst in Thailand we visited Bangkok, Ayuthaya, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Ko Larn and Ko Sak.  I had wanted to get to Kanchanaburi (and Take to Sukhothai), but we decided to take the time we had in Thailand slow and not try and fit too much into our limited time there.  Chiang Mai was certainly a highlight, riding our bikes around the city and into the mountains, seeing some amazing temples, meeting great people, doing a fun cooking course and eating some great food.  We stayed at LaiThai Guesthouse and were so happy to have a pool each day after returning from our rides.

I don't know if I'll be rushing back to Thailand anytime soon.  This time I wasn't as taken with Thailand as I have been in the past.  Khoa San Rd was disgusting and I remember a time when I too thought it was just the best place to hang-out after a day of sites and so on.  The country is beautiful and the people are kind, but these days it's harder and harder to meet people who work outside of the tourism field and that was kind of disappointing.  Don't get me wrong, it was a great trip, we had lots of fun and loved the food and all the great people we met, but after having spent time in other parts of asia I think Thailand has lost a bit of it's appeal for me.

    The July Anniversary

    6 years… Jesus, Mary & Joseph!

    Bye Bye Bye

    Eri's LA bound

I teach a number of private classes and it’s funny, but sometimes you really start to enjoy spending time with some of the students… SOME TIMES.  I had one student, Eri, who was great!  She only started taking my class earlier this year, but we clicked and I really enjoyed her lessons.  Her English was already really good and so we could actually communicate.  She was interesting and out-going and had a real cool view of the world etc.  Unfortunately for me (but luckily for her) she got a transfer to the American office in her company.  So sad to loose her as a student.  I wish her luck in LA.

    Camp

    The Cunty Camp From Hell

Every year I have to endure a week (almost 2, feels like 4) of English camp in Tochigi prefecture.  It’s called camp, but we stay in a crappy building the school owns and are fed the foulest food imaginable.  Planning the camp is fine, but having to go is getting really old… AS AM I!!

    Eating Out With Eri

    Back to 1830

The other week I blogged something somewhere (here, here or here) about going to eat pizza at the Neapolitan Pizzeria, 1830, in Nogizaka, my friend Eri read the entry and seemed interested in trying the pizza, so last night we went together.

I arrived in Nogizaka early, so headed to Dance for a glass of wine.  Had a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (Kim Crawford), which was nice and very different from what I expected.  After my wine I met Eri and we searched for a bank… both not knowing Roppongi at all we ended up going in circles until I asked for directions.  That done, we headed back towards Nogizaka and 1830.

This is my second visit to 1830 and I may be wrong, but I think the pizza is the highlight and pretty much all I will be going for.  Last time I had a green salad which was wet and flavourless (but I forgave them as it was my first time and it may just have been a bad lettuce day) and then last night I ordered the Caesar salad, which although better than my wet green salad, was still lifeless and lacking in oomph!  We also had some pickles (they were good) and a pork and white bean dressed in mustard dish that was rather disappointing.  Haven’t tried the pasta, so can’t comment on that, but am less that impressed with their salads.  That being said, I am v. impressed with their wood-oven pizzas.  Last night we had their Blanca Mediterrane (swordfish, fresh tomato, salad greens, parmesan cheese) 2100 yen, which was light and delicious – a perfect summer pizza.  And then, after Take joined us, we ordered their Rosso 1830 (bacon, petit tomato, arugula, special cheese cream) 1830 yen, which we all loved and gobbled down.  Their bases are perfect and the quality of the ingredients used for toppings is excellent.

After dinner we moseyed on down to Dance again and had a glass of wine and shared a cheese plate (Take and Eri had a Best’s Late Harvest Muscat and I had a glass of Charles Melton’s Rose of Virginia [just because I never had] and then a glass of Penfolds 401 Cab Sav).  I was in the mood to then order a bottle, but the other two had ice-cream on their mind.  If you’re in Roppongi and craving ice-cream after a good wood-oven pizza, then I suggest you high-tail it to Babbi.  Babbi is a gelato shop located away from just about everything, but well worth the effort.

It was a really nice evening and so good to catch-up with Eri.  Even looks like we might all be heading to Australia in December together for a bit of a holiday!  Have to remind Eri how good Australia is before we lose her to Germany, Italy (okay, I can actually deal with that) or Malta!!

    Thailand

    Sorted...

So, I vented about my travels, but I have finally booked a trip and all is good.  Decided I had to get over my "make the most of my time" urges and just relax.  That being done I found a cheap ticket to Thailand that includes accommodation and means Take can come with me.  It fits in perfectly with my August plans (very exciting: Bec, Brett & Lila are coming to stay) and it means Take and I get to see Thailand together for the first time.  We have both been to Thailand, but never together.

The accommodation is in Bangkok, so we can hang-out there for a few days and then leave our bags in the hotel and head off to Chiang Mai and an island for a couple of days each... nice.  Tanzania, Peru, Chile and Iceland aren't going anywhere and I will get to each of them sometime soon.
